The establishment of Department of English dates back to 2009 and post graduate course in English was introduced in the year 2012. The department is functioning with 21 faculties, comprising more than 380 students with a motive to equip the rural students to have a better communicative ability. From the commencement of the course, the students of the department have brought laurels by achieving university ranks. The department marches ahead to build versatile students from the under-privileged sections of the society. It also caters the language and communication for the young vibrant minds. Our main objective of potentiality is to provoke passion in the vast literature at global level. Guided by the proud legacy of the past, the department of English awaits to meet the challenges that lie ahead in the days to come.

  • To use technology – based teaching and learning techniques.
  • To hone personal, emotional and social well – being of the learners.
  • To impart holistic education focusing mainly on rural, economically backward and first-graduation women.
  • To include humanism among the students  community and make them empathize with the society for its betterment.

Department of English facilitates young and enthusiastic learners who come into the portals of Mangayarkarasi College to develop right attitude, sharpen language skills and gain knowledge of literature to meet their career goals and live up to the expectations of the society. Socially relevant and industry related curriculum, technology enabled teaching and learning, comprehensive assessment system and career enhancement programmes such as TOEIC/TOEFL classes were initiated through our department.
General English Programmes in particular are geared up towards imparting not simply much required language skills but employability skills such as soft skills, creative writing helps in grooming every individual to ensure their effective communication and career options.

Department has fortunately been endowed with a team of faculty ever dedicated to the task entrusted and willing to walk an extra mile to accompany the students in their odyssey of personality development and placement. Hence, I envisage a promising future for all our students especially in the context of interest being revived in the field of Arts in general and English Literature in particular.

A graduate with a B.A. in English will have the ability to

  • The B.A. English literature curriculum seeks to give students the opportunity to learn and respond to a variety of novels, plays and poems.
  • LSRW skills enable them to become an effective Language Trainer. These skills also initiate them to become professional teachers.

A graduate with a M.A. in English will have the ability to

  • The curriculum of M.A. English literature includes literary analysis, cultural diversity, critical thinking and communication skills
  • Students also study wide range of literary, socio cultural and political problems in modern English.
  • The introduction to advanced literary theories enables its application to discover the aesthetics hidden in the literary works and arrive at one’s own interpretation.

It is student friendly environment. Students created their own herbal garden. Students were given opportunities to participate in various competitions in and outside the campus. They are given exposures in various fields like, media through participating in Radio FMs, initiative to be an entrepreneur by conducting sales days, participating in television talk shows like Aram Seivom. Many ventures created for them to be educated through seminars, conferences, internship. Help them to acquire job in all possible fields.
