State Institute of Rural Development and Panchayat Raj

The State Institute of Rural Development and Panchayat Raj (SIRD&PR), Tamil Nadu, plays a key role in strengthening rural governance by providing training, capacity building, and technical support to Panchayati Raj Institutions (PRIs). Under the Revamped Rashtriya Gram Swaraj Abhiyan (RGSA), the institute focuses on empowering local bodies to prepare and implement effective Gram Panchayat Development Plans (GPDP). In this context, Mangayarkarasi College of Arts and Science for Women, Madurai, actively collaborates in rural development initiatives by engaging students and faculty in extension activities, participatory planning, and awareness programs in adopted villages.

Through RRGSA, Mangayarkarasi College of Arts and Science for Women implements action plans in collaboration with village panchayats and local communities. The college conducts baseline surveys, identifies key issues, and organizes programs related to sanitation, health, education, and livelihood development. Students participate in field visits, awareness campaigns, and capacity-building sessions, helping villagers understand and access various government schemes. This involvement ensures community participation and promotes inclusive development at the grassroots level.

In addition, the college supports continuous monitoring and evaluation of development activities by working with SIRD&PR and local bodies. Initiatives such as social audits, digital awareness, and e-governance training are encouraged to improve transparency and efficiency. Regular interaction between students, faculty, panchayat leaders, and villagers helps build leadership skills and strengthens local governance. This sustained effort by Mangayarkarasi College contributes to sustainable and self-reliant rural development in and around Madurai.
